The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s). An MPN is good for up to 10 years unless certain conditions are present.

When to Complete or Renew your MPN

  • If you have not had a prior Direct Stafford loan
  • It has been more than 10 years since you completed your last MPN
  • If you have had Federal Stafford Loans discharged for any reason

If you have not yet created your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, you will need to do this first.

Go to https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm 


  1. Go to the Federal Student Aid website (https://studentaid.gov/)
  2. Click Log in to your account
  3. Enter your FSA ID and Password
  4. Click the Log In button 
  5. Read the Disclaimer
  6. Click the Accept button
  7. Under Sign the Master Promissory Note Section, click on Complete MPN 
  8. In the “I’m an Undergraduate Student” section, click on the Start button
  9. Check that pre-populated information showing is correct, and fill-in any necessary blank line items
  10. Click on the Continue button
  11. In “Choose a State,” type Pennsylvania
  12. in the “Search School by Name,” type Community College of Allegheny County
  13. Click on the Continue button
  14. Enter your Reference Information
    1. Please note the following information about your references: 
      • The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian.
      • References must have different addresses and telephone numbers.
      • References who live outside the United States are not acceptable.
      • If the reference does not have a telephone number, or email address, or does not wish to provide an email address, enter N/A.
      • Providing an email address for a reference is optional. If you provide an email address for a reference, we may use it to communicate with the reference.
  15. Click on the Continue button
  16. Read the MPN Agreement (pages 1 through 5)
  17. Review and Edit the information entered previously
  18. Click on the Continue button
  19. Read and Agree to the promise
  20. Enter your formal name into the name fields
  21. Click the Submit button
