Overview
This guide walks users through setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to secure their accounts. Users can choose between the Microsoft Authenticator app (recommended) or phone-based authentication.
Prerquisites
- Access to your work or school account
- A mobile device (smartphone preferred)
- Internet connection
Procedure
Begin Setup
After signing in, you will be prompted to secure your account. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
Option 1: Microsoft Authenticator (Recommended)
Note
If you prefer not to use the Authenticator app, select “Set up a different way to sign in” and proceed to Option 2.
Start Authenticator Setup
- When prompted, choose Microsoft Authenticator
- If on mobile, use the provided download link
- Otherwise, install the app manually from your device’s app store
- Click Next
Add Account in App
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Tap Add Account
- Select Work or School Account
Scan QR Code
- Tap Scan QR Code in the app

Use your phone to scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen
Verify Sign-In

Enter the number shown on your computer into the Authenticator app
Completion
- Confirmation will appear once setup is successful

Option 2: Phone Authentication
Select Phone Method
- Click “Set up a different way to sign in”
- Choose Phone
Enter Phone Number
- Input your phone number
- Choose how to receive your verification code:
- Text Message
- Phone call
- Click Next
Verify Code
- Enter the verification code received via text or call

Click Next
Completion
- Confirmation will appear once setup is successful
