Classroom ASL requests

Those seeking ASL interpretation in their courses first need to register with the Office of Supportive Services and Accessibility (OSSA) to formally establish this service as an eligible accommodation. Registered students can begin this process by submitting an initial accommodation request form (linked here).

When approved, OSSA will pull the student's course schedule and will share those details with SLIP ("Sign Language Interpretation Professionals"), which is the designated local ASL agency that supports the college's requests.

In preparation for the start of a new semester, OSSA will provide the schedules of previously registered students one month before the first day of classes. For example, if classes start for the fall semester on August 16, schedules will be sent to SLIP on July 16 to ensure coverage for the semester.

The Deaf student will then need to inform OSSA of any course schedule changes that happen after that date. This is essential because OSSA is not otherwise notified when these changes occur, regardless of whether a student adds or drops a course. Additionally, the Deaf student should also contact OSSA should there be other course changes as the semester moves forward. These include:

1.      Course instructor and location changes

a.      Include the relevant information in an email to OSSA, including the full course number, the new instructor’s name and email, and/or the new physical location for the class.

b.     If an in-person class is moved remote OR the zoom link changes for an online, please provide these links so that interpreters can join more easily.

2.      If class is canceled or you will miss class

a.      This allows us to notify SLIP and the interpreters so they can assist others and not drive out to campus when their services will not be needed that day.

b.     Reach out to OSSA as soon as possible with this notice, and we will communicate with SLIP to release the interpreters for that class date.

ASL requests for meetings or other official CCAC-Sponsored events.

While OSSA has access to course schedules, we do not have easy access to this information for campus meetings, appointments, or events. For these, please fill out the CCAC ASL Interpreter Request Form so that we can have all the information needed to support communication access needs in these spaces.

The form can be filled out by either the student/Deaf individual or someone else on their behalf. 

Please submit these requests as early as possible, preferably at least two weeks in advance. Requests submitted with less notice are still welcome; however, interpreter availability may be limited. Providing complete and accurate information will help OSSA coordinate your request as efficiently as possible.

After submitting this form, you will receive follow-up communication from OSSA regarding your request. Please do not assume that an interpreter has been scheduled until you receive official confirmation from OSSA. We will also reach out with options should interpreters not be available for the desired date and time.

ASL for non-CCAC events using College facilities

CCAC spaces are used by many entities throughout the year for meetings and other events. Coordination of ASL interpretation for non-CCAC events that are using college facilities will be the administrative and financial responsibility of the event organizers.
