What is Work-study?
Work-study is an employment program available to students who show eligibility by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have an interest in part-time work at the college. Work-study is designed to assist students with paying for costs associated with their education. In addition, work-study enables a student to gain valuable employment experience. There are two types of work study: Federal and Institutional. The Federal Work-Study Program is a form of federal financial aid made available to qualified, eligible students. Students who do not qualify for Federal Work Study may be eligible for Institutional Work Study, for example, international students.
What are the eligibility requirements to participate in the federal work-study program?
•Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
•Register for a minimum of six credits during the fall and spring semesters.
•Demonstrate financial need (based on income, assets, and family size) as determined by the federal needs analysis formula.
•Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible non-Citizen.
•Not be in default on an educational loan or owe repayment of an educational grant.
•Be in good academic standing according to the Federal Financial Aid Guidelines.
What are the eligibility requirements to participate in the institutional work-study program?
•No FAFSA required for international student applicants. All other applicants must complete a FAFSA.
•Register for a minimum of six credits during the fall and spring semesters.
•Be in good academic standing according to the Federal Financial Aid Guidelines.
When the financial aid office receives a completed work-study application, the information is reviewed, and eligibility is determined. After the review is completed, financial aid sends an email to the student regarding their work study application.
How do I locate a work-study job?
If a student is eligible for work-study, an email is sent to the student’s academic email from workstudy@ccac.edu with information concerning the next steps, which include searching for open positions and applying to positions of interest. All available work-study positions are posted in Handshake (https://ccac.joinhandshake.com/login). Each posting includes a brief description of what the department does, responsibilities, and any special skills needed. When a student locates a work-study position they are interested in, they need to apply. The supervisor will conduct a brief “interview” via phone, videoconference, or in person with the work-study candidate to learn about the student’s abilities and needs prior to hiring a work-study student. This process is a short simulation of what a job seeker needs to do to secure a position in today’s job market.
How many hours per week can I work?
Students who qualify for work-study typically work 10-20 hours per week. The number of hours you are permitted to work is based on the amount of the work-study award. The award amount and maximum number of hours per week are specified in the terms of the work-study contract.
How does a work-study get paid?
Work-study students are paid bi-weekly. A bi-weekly pay schedule will be provided with the new hire paperwork. All checks are directly deposited into the account information that is provided when you are submitting your new hire paperwork.
