ENG 090 Fundamentals of College Writing
Description:
This class helps students develop the abilities they need to be ready for college-level writing assignments. Extra attention is devoted to writing clear and grammatically correct sentences while drafting academic essays. Students develop skills in analyzing texts, evaluating arguments, and writing essays.
How much reading will you do?
- 2-5 pages per day;
- 8-10 pages per week
How many essays will you write during the semester?
- 4-5 essays that range from 2-5 double-spaced, typed pages
Will you be required to do research?
- Rarely
Students who should take this course:
- May have written essays before, but they have been short (1-2 pages)
- Haven’t read printed works of several pages or may not have read in many years
- Have problems with grammar and clarity in their writing and will benefit from dedicated classroom time to develop foundational academic writing skills
ENG 101L English Composition 1 with Tutorial Writing Lab (4 credits)
Description:
Students write college-level essays that display focus, organization, appropriate style, and technical control. They develop skills in critical thinking and close reading of texts and respond in writing and discussion to assigned topics.
This class meets with the English 101 classes and includes all of the same reading and writing assignments. It has an additional writing lab that students are required to attend.
The writing lab is designed to help students who need additional support and practice in completing college-level reading and writing assignments.
How much reading will you do?
- 3-5 pages per day;
- 15-25 pages per week
How many essays will you write during the semester?
- 4-5 essays that range from 3-7 double-spaced, typed pages
Will you be required to do research?
- Sometimes
Students who should take this course:
- Have written essays before, but they may have been short (2-3 pages) or it may have been many years since they have done so
- Have read printed works before, but not works of several pages, not regularly, or not in several years
- Have problems with grammar and clarity in their writing, and will benefit from one-to-one tutoring and participation in writing labs under the guidance of professional writing faculty

Students who should take this course:
- Have written essays of three typed pages or more on several occasions
- Have read printed works of several pages on a regular basis in previous educational settings
- May have minor grammar or clarity issues in their writing, but usually are able to edit and correct them
